TREKKING TOURS

SIMIEN MOUNTAIN

The SEMIEN Mountains are one of the Africa’s largest mountains ranges and are one of the most spectacular views. Many of the peaks rising above 4000m, they make an awesome sight and contain Ethiopia’s highest mountain and the fourth highest in Africa,Ras DASHEN Mountain standing majestically at 4620m. The SEMIEN mountain national park, an area abundant with flora and fauna, fertile cultivated terraces and vibrant hillside villages. Gaping monotone scenery aside, the park is the last stronghold for the endangered WALIAIBEX& the main population center of the magnificent golden-manned gelada monkey, while bird watchers are practically guaranteed close-up views of the awesome lammergeyer (a bird vulture). The park was one of the first four sites to be inscribed on the world heritage list since 1978.The park is the refuge of the extremely rare Ethiopian wolf , gelada baboon and WALIAIBEX, a got unique to Ethiopia.

A total of 21 mammals have been recorded including seven endemic species. The SEMIENregion surrounded by old cultural centers like AXUM, LALIBELA & Gondar and has been habituated by cultivators for at least 2000 years.

TREKKING TOUR TO BALE MOUNTAINS

More than any other park in Ethiopia, the Bale Mountains are known by their wild life. Over 60 mammal species and 260 bird species have been recorded here.

The scenery may be less spectacular than what was in the SemienMountains, but it is certainly no less beautiful. Rivers cut deep gorges through the plateaus; streams, waterfalls and alpine lakes are all features of the landscape. In the lower hills, highlanders canter along century-old paths on their richly caparisoned horses, and the noise of shepherd boys cracking their whips echoes around the valley. Among the abundant wildflowers, beautiful birds such as the malachite and tucazze sun-birds flit about. The national park stretches over 2400sq km and ranges in altitude from 1500m to 4377m, and on the plateau, temperature range from 10 to 26 depending the time of the year.

TREKKING

Organizing the team (guide, scout, horse) inevitably takes time. The best plan is to arrive at DINSHO in the early afternoon, sort out your trek for the following morning then spend the rest of the day exploring the wooded land immediately surrounding the park headquarters. A night spent in DINSHO is also a good start towards acclimatization.

CLASSIC ROUTE

The park covers a relatively small area, and most treks last just six days, or four days with a vehicle, through longer excursions can be planned.

BALE MOUNTAINS

DAY ONE

The four-or six day standard trek begins at the park headquarters in Dinsho and works its way southwest up the web and Wollo Valleys to the Finch’ Abera waterfall (two or three hours from the park headquarters). You can either camp here or continue on to MARARO (3750M), where there’s a pleasant campsite beside a stream.

DAY TWO

This day is spent walking up the WASAMA Valley (six hours). A good stop on the way is the mineral springs at WARGONA. Keep an eye out for the giant molerats, which are easily seen in the area. The steep ascent to the SANETTI plateau then begins. A good campsite is beneath the crags of Mt. BATU in the SHAYA Valley.

DAY THREE

Mt. BATU can be climbed on day three, before you walk to the picturesque campsite situated in the TEGONA Valley under the sheer cliffs beside the GARBA GURACHA Lake (six hours). The campsite is a terrific spot for birds of prey. Lammergeyers, Buzzards and Eagles are all commonly seen here.

DAY FOUR

This day is spent walking to the Crane Lakes (six hours) – marked on some maps as the ‘ Alpine Lakes’. These are known for their water birds, and as one of the best spots to see the Ethiopian Wolf. A detour can be made to visit TulluDeemtu. It will then take you another day’s trekking back to Dinsho. A vehicle could meet you on the Goba-Dola-Mena road.

TulluDeemtu is little more than a very monotonous scree slope, with a pretty unattractive observatory planted on the top. However, it affords good views from the summit, over the HarennaForest to the south, the Sanetti plateau to the north and the Town of Goba to the northeast. From the main Goba –Dola-Mena road, it’s 4km to the mountain.

While the other agencies listed here have been around for a long time, this brand-new company lacks a track record. However, the owner seems to have his act together.
